A verified baseline
for every SBTi target

SBTi gives you 24 months to validate after you commit.

A real baseline is what gets you there.

What gets in the way

Three reasons SBTi
commitments stall

The 24-month deadline arrives faster than the data
Once you commit to Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), you have 24 months to submit validated targets. Most retailers run out of time before the data is ready. Spend-based estimates fill the gap. The validation fails.
Your reduction plan is built on guesswork
Without product-level data, you don't know what really drives your footprint. You pick the changes that look easiest. The footprint barely moves.
Fixing the target costs more than getting it right
Renegotiating supplier contracts. Redesigning products. Buying offsets to bridge the gap. Correcting course after a public commitment is dramatically more expensive than getting the baseline right from the start.
How Root solves it
From estimated commitment
to verified delivery.
A real measurement, a real reduction plan, and the data SBTi expects.

Step  1
Create a product-level Scope 3 baseline.
Root brings together your product and operational data and calculates Scope 3 from the bottom up. Every SKU, every material, every supplier. The result is a baseline that reflects your actual emissions, not a financial approximation.
Step  2
Know which products drive your footprint.
Root breaks your Scope 3 down by product line, material category, supplier, and lifecycle phase. Before you commit to any target, you know which products, materials, and suppliers carry the largest share of your footprint.
Step  3
Test reductions before you commit.
Root models what it would take to reach different reduction levels. Switch a product material. Change a transport route. Move production to a lower-carbon region. Compare the carbon impact and the cost side by side, at product level and at company level.

The combination that delivers the required reduction most efficiently becomes visible before the commitment, not after.
Step  4
Stay on track for seven years.
SBTi targets run for seven years. Each year, you report progress against the baseline. As suppliers, materials, or production change, Root recalculates automatically. The data behind your annual report stays accurate and on track.
An SBTi target is a public seven-year promise.
Root makes sure yours is one you can keep.

with confidence?
What you get
Targets set on real data. Commit with confidence
When you submit your SBTi target, the data behind it is already validation-ready. Every SKU, every supplier, every material is on file. The reduction strategy is modelled, the costs are mapped, and the seven-year delivery plan is real, not a guess.

For the first time, the same dataset that produces your SBTi baseline also feeds your CSRD transition plan, reduction planning, and Scope 3 disclosure. One data foundation for every report, footprint, and sustainability claim.
Benefits
Three ways a verified baseline
pays back.
Every euro spent on reduction works harder
You know which products, materials, and suppliers carry the largest share of your footprint. Every euro spent on reduction goes where it moves the number most. Not where it's easiest to change. The same budget delivers more measured carbon reduction.
No surprises mid-journey.
Targets set on the wrong baseline look easy until they're not. Targets set on real data hold up to the audit, the investor question, and the supplier negotiation. The numbers don't fall apart somewhere halfway.
SBTi becomes a credential you lead with.
Investors check whether retailers have validated SBTi targets. Buyers ask. Industry bodies make them a membership condition. A commitment grounded in product-level data is one you put on your website, your tender response, and your investor deck.
Why it matters
239 companies couldn't keep their promise. You can.
In March 2024, SBTi removed 239 companies including Microsoft, Walmart, Procter & Gamble, and Unilever for missing the 24-month deadline to validate their targets. 54% of companies name Scope 3 supply chain emissions as their single biggest barrier.

FAQs
Common questions about SBTi with Root.
How much of our Scope 3 does our SBTi target need to cover?
SBTi requires your near-term target to cover at least 67% of Scope 3 emissions when Scope 3 represents more than 40% of your total footprint. For retailers in apparel, furniture, toys, health and personal care, and lifestyle goods, Scope 3 is almost always above that threshold. Root produces the product-level data that lets you meet the 67% requirement.
Will our SBTi target validation pass?
SBTi technical review tests your methodology, your data sources, and your assumptions. Root produces all three in the format SBTi expects, with the source trail behind every number. Targets set on Root data move through validation faster and stay on track through the seven-year delivery window.
What if our targets are already set on spend-based data?
You're not stuck with them. Root can recalculate your baseline at product level and show whether the target you committed to is realistic, easier than you thought, or harder than the data suggested. From there, you can adjust your roadmap or, in some cases, reset your target with SBTi.
How does scenario modelling actually work?
Root lets you change a material, a supplier, a transport route, or a production region and see the carbon and cost impact instantly. Compare combinations of changes to find the reduction strategy that delivers your SBTi target most efficiently.
How does this connect to our other sustainability work?
The same dataset that produces your SBTi baseline also feeds your CSRD disclosure, climate transition plan, Scope 3 reporting, and reduction planning. One data foundation for every report, footprint, and sustainability claim.
