What gets in the way

Why retailers struggle to cover
their full product catalogue

The old way costs too much
per product
A footprint takes weeks. It costs thousands of euros. For hundreds of products, the cost adds up to years of work. The old way was built for one product at a time.
Your data is not ready
for LCA
Your product data lives in many places. ERP, PLM, supplier files, spreadsheets. None of it was set up for carbon footprint work. Cleaning it up is a project on its own, before the LCA even starts.
Products change faster
than the data keeps up
Suppliers change. Materials get replaced. New products launch each season. A static LCA goes out of date the moment any of these happen. By the next report, the numbers no longer match what you sell.
How Root solves it
A footprint for every product,
from the same automated process
The same calculation runs across your full catalogue.
01
Connect data
02
Match factors
03
Run calculations
Step  1
Connect your product data once
Root uses product data from ERP, PLM, supplier files, and BOMs. Materials, product mass, origin, production method, and transport flow into one structured dataset. For every product in your catalogue, not just a sample.
Step  2
Match every input to a verified
emission factor
Root's matching engine connects each material, transport mode, and energy source to verified factors from Ecoinvent, Agribalyse and Agri-footprint.

Every proposed match shows its source before you confirm it.
Step  3
Calculate every product, all at once
One run produces a full LCA across your product catalogue. Calculations are in line with the ISO 14040/14044 LCA and ISO 14067 PCF methodologies.

Every assumption is documented. Every source is traceable.
Once your product carbon footprints are calculated, the same dataset
can be used for Scope 3, EPD, DPP, green claims, SBTi, and ecodesign.
The PCF is the foundation. Everything else builds on it.
Want footprints
across your full catalogue?
What you get
Every product
in your catalogue has
a verified footprint
When a buyer asks about one product, you have the data.
When CSRD reviews your Scope 3, the math behind it is on file.
When you make a green claim, the LCA stands behind it.

For the first time, you can also see where your impact really
sits. Which materials. Which products. Which suppliers. Which
routes. That complete overview turns your sustainability
strategy into specific actions.
Benefits
Three ways product carbon
footprints pay off
Reports you can defend
Scope 3 figures move from spend-based to activity-based. CSRD reports rest on a documented data foundation. Green claims and DPPs are backed by real calculations, not what suppliers say.
Sustainability wins you business
Buyers now ask for product-level carbon data before they sign deals. Retailers with verified footprints win the contract. Retailers without them are cut from shortlists they used to win.
One sustainability dataset, reuse it everywhere
DPP, EPD, SBTi, and CSRD all draw from the same product data. Once it's there, each new ask adds to it. You stop starting from scratch.
Why it matters
The math of doing this manually
doesn't add up
A single LCA takes 19 days.
Your full retail catalogue takes
decades of consultant work.

Bon Ton Toys created footprints for 601 products
with Root, achieving a 96.8% reduction in time
versus the traditional process. The same data now
feeds their B Corp certification, CSRD readiness,
and reporting to WWF.

FAQs
Find quick answers to the most common questions about Root,
our methodology, data requirements, and timelines.
What if we don't have detailed bills of materials for every product?
That is the normal starting point. Root works with what you have. A single main material per product is enough to begin a footprint. For products with no data of their own, Root creates a proxy from a similar product that does have data. Even one main material on that source product is enough. Every proxy and estimate is clearly documented, with its source on file. Most teams start with partial data and add to it over the first few months.
Will the methodology hold up to a third-party audit?
Yes. Calculations follow ISO 14040 and 14044. Every step is recorded. Every emission factor shows its source. When an auditor asks how a number was reached, the answer is one click away.
How accurate are the footprints when most of our data is estimated?
Every data point carries a confidence level. You always see what is primary data and what is estimated, with the source on file. Footprints get more accurate as your data does. Root flags which gaps would change the result the most, so you focus there first.
How long until we have footprints across the full catalogue?
A working footprint dataset is usually ready in a few weeks. The timing depends on the size of your catalogue and how easily you can export your data. It does not depend on manual calculation work. Footprints improve over time as your data does.
Our product data lives across multiple systems. Is that a problem?
No. Root connects to ERP, PLM, supplier systems, and spreadsheet exports. The data does not need to be cleaned or reformatted before it arrives. Root structures it as it comes in. It shows you what is in, what is missing, and what is estimated.
