What gets in the way

Three reasons most retailers
don't have EPDs

An EPD is more

than an LCA
Each EPD needs an LCA, the right Product Category Rule (PCR), a programme operator, and third-party verification. Each step takes weeks. For a full retail catalogue, the cost runs into hundreds of thousands of euros. The total time runs into years.
Finding the right PCR isn't obvious
Each PCR covers a specific type of product. The right one depends on material, end use, and geography. A retail catalogue has hundreds of products. Working out which PCR applies to each takes time. Get it wrong, and the EPD isn't recognised by the buyer who asked for it.
Past LCAs can't be reused
for EPDs
Most retailers already have LCA work done. But those LCAs didn't follow a PCR. To turn them into EPDs, the work starts over.
How Root solves it
From product data
to EPDs ready for review
Create the data foundation. Match the PCR.
Prepare for third-party verification. Keep EPDs up to date.
01
Connect data
02
Verify inputs
03
Generate evidence
04
Stay updated
Step  1
Connect your product data
Root uses the data you already have to connect your full supply chain automatically.

Bills of materials, transport, facilities, usage, and end-of-life data all link to the right product, supplier, and route.
Step  2
Apply the right PCR to each product
Root finds the right PCR for each product based on category, material, end use, and geography.

Every output follows the right standard from the start.
Step  3
Produce EPD-ready outputs
Root runs the LCA calculations automatically across your full catalogue. Calculations follow ISO 14040 and 14044 and the relevant PCR.

The outputs are auditable and ready to send to a programme operator for third-party verification.
Step  4
Keep EPDs up to date
When product data changes, Root recalculates automatically. When a PCR is updated, Root flags the impact on your existing EPDs.

Your EPDs stay up to date without hiring a consultant each time.
An EPD is what the market accepts. Root produces them across your
catalogue, from the data you already have.
Want EPDs ready
for your next tender?
What you get
EPDs become part of how you do business
Every product category in your catalogue has a verified EPD on file. When a buyer requests one, you share the EPD. When a tender asks for PCR-aligned data, you share the EPD. When the PCR for your category updates, Root updates the EPD.

For the first time, EPDs are something you have, not something you start over for each category. New tenders draw from the same foundation.
Benefits
Three ways verified EPDs pay off
EPDs decide

who qualifies to bid
In public procurement and large B2B deals, EPDs are becoming a requirement to enter. Without one, your bid doesn't qualify. With EPDs across your catalogue, you can bid in markets where suppliers without them can't.
New rules demand

verified proof
EU rules on green claims now require verified proof for environmental statements. An EPD is third-party reviewed and based on full life cycle data. That's proof you can defend when buyers, regulators, or consumers look closely.
Every EPD keeps paying off
A published EPD works in every tender, sales call, and partnership talk where sustainability comes up. The work is done once. The value keeps going.
Why it matters
EPDs went from rare

to required in five years
From 3,000 EPDs in 2020 to over 18,000 by 2025. The tenders that used to be open are now closed to retailers without one.

FAQs
Common questions about EPDs with Root.
How does Root pick the right PCR for each product?
Root finds the right PCR for each product based on category, material, end use, and where it's sold. It then applies that PCR to the calculation. You see why each PCR was picked, with the source on file.
What if no PCR exists for our product category?
Some product categories don't have a published PCR yet. Root flags these in your dataset. For now, you can produce an LCA in line with ISO 14040 and 14044. All sources and methods are on file. Once a PCR is published for your category, Root turns it into a full EPD.
Will our EPD outputs be accepted by programme operators?
Yes. Root's outputs follow what programme operators expect. They include the calculations, data sources, PCR alignment, and reasoning that verifiers need. The programme operator does the third-party review. Root produces everything they need to do it.
What happens when a PCR is updated after we have published?
When a PCR is updated, Root flags the impact on your existing outputs. The new calculation runs in the background. You can refresh and re-verify the EPD without starting over.
We have EPDs already done through consultants. Can we use them?
Yes. Root can take an existing EPD and check whether it's still PCR-aligned and current. If the data behind it needs updating, Root re-runs the calculation from your existing product data. The original work carries forward.
